Summary
Mac OS X Panther was released on October 24, 2003. In addition to providing much-improved performance, it also incorporated the most extensive update yet to the user interface, which also integrated a brushed-metal UI. Apple had recently switched the corporate typeface to Adobe Myriad, which coincided with the new sleeker titanium product releases, most notably the Power Mac G5. As a result, the new OSX packaging emphasized the new UI and the number X in brushed metal, symbolizing the significance of this release. In addition, slab serifs were added to the X to project the stability and power of the operating system. Finally, the boldest design decision was to remove the name from the front of the box, allowing the X alone to communicate. The box utilized the solid black background used for the Powerbooks and the G5 packaging. The X was embossed and printed directly over the metallic foil to accentuate the tactile quality of the brushed metal.
