Ettore Sottsass: To me design, as I said, is a way of discussing life. It is a way of addressing society, politics, eroticism, food and even design. At the end, it is a way of building up a possible figurative utopia or metaphor about life. Certainly to me design is not restricted to the necessity of giving form to a more or less stupid product for a more or less sophisticated industry. So, if you have to teach something about design, you have to teach, first of all, about life and you have to insist, explaining that technology is one of the metaphors of life.

Summary

Brando Sans is a distinct companion to Brando. Like its mate, Brando Sans has contemporary humanist qualities but is simplified with a practicality suited for editorial design, branding, digital experiences, and signage systems. Although simple at first sight, Brando Sans retains the character and charm of its serif counterpart while introducing some unique traits of its own, like the curved ‘l’ or a more symmetrical approach to glyphs like the ‘M’ and ‘W.’

The family is available in eight weights — analogous to Brando from Hairline to Black — making it equipped for large display settings and the demands of small body copy or signs. It is geared toward complex design work that needs typographic distinction and flexibility.

Brando Sans covers over 140 languages. The comprehensive character set includes small caps, various figure styles, fractions, and mathematical symbols. The italics are true italics, adding to the humanist, approachable feel and making Brando Sans a well-rounded typeface with plenty of attitudes, but designed to ultimately be useful and functional. Brando Sans was designed in 2015–2016.
